Floor Was Overdue for Travertine Refinishing
Scottsdale, Arizona homeowners knew who to call for travertine refinishing when signs of wear became evident on their stone floor. Dullness, etch damage, and light scratches were obvious in areas exposed to high traffic and use. There was an old coating on the floor, too.
We explained to the clients that we could give their travertine any type of finish they wanted, from a smooth, non-reflective honed finish to a glossy, glass-like polished finish. If they preferred something in between, we could provide a range of options. They decided to keep the existing finish—without the surface damage, of course!
Our Travertine Refinishing Method
First, removed the coating. Then, we honed the travertine to erase the surface damage. The honing process actually removes a very thin upper layer of stone, revealing the brand new stone underneath.
To restore the finish to the desired level of polish, we used a series of progressively finer grit diamond pads on our floor machine. With each pass the level of reflectivity improved. Once it looked just right, we cleaned the travertine and applied impregnating sealer to inhibit staining.
The homeowners were very pleased with the outcome. We advised them to schedule services with us periodically, because recleaning, a light honing and repolishing, and resealing would help maintain the fresh, elegant look they wanted.
